Getting Started With SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools
Most people who install Express for the first time get stuck at the same place: connecting. By default, setup creates a named instance called SQLEXPRESS, so the server name to type is your machine name followed by \SQLEXPRESS, or simply .\SQLEXPRESS on the same machine.
The second surprise is remote access. Express does not listen on TCP/IP out of the box, so other computers cannot connect until you enable the protocol in SQL Server Configuration Manager, restart the service and open the firewall. The SQL Server Browser service helps clients find a named instance on the network. Once you know these two points, most setup questions go away.
Also keep its limits in mind: databases are capped in size, the engine uses limited memory and CPU, and there is no SQL Server Agent to schedule jobs. For a small app or for learning, none of that matters much.
This download from 2009 is old history now. If you want a free edition today, pick the current Express release, which has higher limits than this one.
