SQL SERVER – 2008 – Download Copy of Developer Edition for Free Is Myth

It is quite common myth that SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition is FREE.

SQL Server 2008 developer edition has same code base and same features which are available in SQL Server 2008 enterprise edition. Only difference between them is licensing terms. Developer Edition can not be used in production environment and it can be used on development server only.

I have received quite a lots of emails how this can be downloaded for free. First of this version is not free. It is available for $50 to download. However, those developer who are really looking for free edition of SQL Server 2008 should try SQL Server Express Edition.

SQL Server Express Edition is Freely available to download.

Please refer here for additional information regarding pricing of different SQL Server Editions.

Update: You can Download SQL SERVER 2016 Developer Edition for FREE

  • Hi Pinal. I’m at a new client and they tell me they are paying for a full Enterprise license for their QA environment. They mentioned something about being a Java shop so they have to pay for the full license. This doesn’t seem right to me. Can’t they just use the Developer Edition for their QA environment?

  • Did you get the CD for the developer edition of SQL Server? If you did, on the case there is a Lic. Key. You should be able to enter the Lic. Key into the Dev Version you have and it will come up ok. If it doesn’t then you probably downloaded just the Trial Version of SQL Server. If you go to Programs in Control panel and uninstall it then reinstall the Dev Version you received you should be good to go. What OS are you running on your local machine?

    @Susheel

SQL Server Developer Edition is not Free. You need to buy it.

If you want to learn SQL Server and want to download a free version of SQL Server, then you can either download Evaluation Edition (Valid for 6 Months, All features included) or Express Edition (Free for unlimited time but will have very limited features, Good to improve developing Skills, not for Administration).

Evaluation Edition can be downloaded at this weblink,
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-2016

Express Edition can be downloaded at this weblink,
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-2016

Check this out, let us know if you have any questions.

    ~ Peace.

  • Anybody has a clue on this stored procedure

write a stored procedure that returns the PhotoID of the closest photo, that points to the location.

  • 1. You will write a stored procedure that returns the PhotoID of the closest photo, that points to the location.
    2. Even though our photos are panoramic, a photo is considered to point towards a destination only if the direction is within +30 degrees and -30 degrees from the direction in the database table for that photo.
    3. As an example, the building at 383 Richmond Street is located at Latitude 42.9827 (North), and Longitude -81.2494 (West). The best photo for that location is PhotoID 11090179, located at Latitude 42.98274291, Longitude -81.24926685.

  • Hi Pinal, great stuff as always. Perhaps you can help with this question related to this blog entry: I wanted to point someone to where to buy the Developer edition, but had a heck of a time.

Is there any one link at MS to buy the Developer edition, for someone who does not want to buy the whole MSDN? I have searched all over (the site and search engines).

Or if it can’t be bought from MS, does anyone have a link to a legitimate partner store? (Before anyone would jump on my for “not searching on my own”, really I did. In fact, it’s how I ended up on this blog entry….though I’m a long-time daily reader of Pinal’s blog.) Thanks.

  • There are many differences between Developer and Express Edition. And it is very cheap but I think it should be free.

  • I have an MSDN subscription, and Ive downloaded the 2008 developer’s edition twice (I also used the 2005 developers edition). This is on a new win7 laptop. However, when I go to install it, I come up to a license box with a dropdown that has 3 items: Enterprise Evaluation, Express, and Express Adv anced. Any ideas what the problem is?
    Thanks, Mark
