SQL Server Express Size limits depend on the engine release. The 2021 article 10 GB answer does not cover every current version.

| Express release | Maximum relational database size |
|---|---|
| SQL Server 2008 R2 through 2022 | 10 GB per database. |
| SQL Server 2025 | 50 GB per database. |
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS ProductVersion,SERVERPROPERTY('Edition') AS Edition;
SELECT name,type_desc,size/128.0 AS AllocatedMB FROM sys.database_files ORDER BY file_id;The limit covers relational data across the database data files. Each MDF or NDF does not receive a separate allowance. Logs and FILESTREAM are excluded but still need space and protection. SQL Server 2025 Express permits 50 GB; 2008 R2 through 2022 permits 10 GB.
Check actual edition and release before interpreting allocations. Express CPU, memory and feature limits also affect suitability. Plan a supported edition or release change with application validation. My old blanket upgrade-at-10-GB answer was incomplete.
The Snowflake course is a related historical learning link. It does not replace capacity planning. Assess operational requirements for the intended product.

A relational-data limit is not the whole capacity budget, it is one edition restriction alongside resources and features.
