How I Prepare for SQL Server Interview Questions

Over the years, I have sat on both sides of the interview table. The candidates who impress me are rarely the ones who memorized a long list of answers. They are the ones who can explain why. When you read SQL Server interview questions, do not stop at the answer. Open SQL Server Management Studio, write the query, break it on purpose and see what happens. You will remember what you tested far longer than what you only read. Practice explaining your answer out loud, as if the interviewer is sitting right next to you.

Some topics show up in almost every DBA and developer interview. Know the difference between clustered and nonclustered indexes. Know how INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN and CROSS JOIN behave. Be comfortable with GROUP BY, HAVING and the order in which a query is logically processed. Understand backups, restores and recovery models. Be ready to explain how you would find a slow query or a blocking session. For a DBA role, expect questions about security, maintenance jobs and what you do when a disk fills up.

Finally, be honest. If you do not know an answer, say so and explain how you would find it. Every interviewer I respect values that more than a confident guess. If you are hiring, ask candidates to walk you through a real problem they solved. The story tells you more than a quiz.
