SQL Bangalore: The First SQL Server User Group Meeting

SQL Bangalore, our new SQL Server user group, held its first meeting on November 24, 2012. We had five 30 minute sessions and a fantastic time. This is my report from that day.

Is There a SQL Server User Group in Bangalore?

A common question I receive is: do we have a SQL Server user group in Bangalore? Yes, we do. It is called SQL Bangalore, and we held our first meeting on November 24, 2012.

We were going to hold another meeting soon. The goal was to keep up a monthly rhythm of user group meetings. We asked everyone in the Bangalore area to join the Facebook page, to get regular updates about SQL Server.

Five Sessions

We had the best of the best speakers presenting all five sessions. Vinod Kumar M inaugurated the event with a session on T-SQL Pitfalls. That excellent, eye-opening session was followed by Manas Dash. Manas presented a fantastic, funny session on Functions. It enlightened everybody about the functions introduced in SQL Server 2012.

We had a surprise guest from Mumbai, Raj Chaodhary. Raj has an interesting way to present sessions, and the topic was SQL Joins. This hard to follow act was followed by Sudeepta, who presented on Contained Database. The subject is entertaining and interesting.

My Session

My session was last in order, and I was eagerly waiting to present. I had decided to do something new this time. I created around 52 slides and two demos. I was committed to go over all 52 slides and both demos in 25 minutes.

I also had an interesting story to tell. I was a bit nervous. Still, I went over the complete deck and both demos in the 25 minutes I had.

A Guest from the USA

We were also fortunate to have an international guest, Lynn Langit from the USA, at the event. Lynn presented an overview of Big Data in little time. Not everyone can do that efficiently.

A Great Day

Overall, we had great fun with 100+ attendees learning SQL Server.

A user group is not a one-time meeting, it is a monthly rhythm that people can count on.

  • @Pinal,

If I have to move to India, It will be either Hyderabad (because its my birth place) or it will Bangalore (because some genius people stay there are doing some really good work for SQL Server Community). I am sure everyone enjoyed these sessions (I hate to miss these sessions :( ).

    Great post, Sir !
However, you forgot about “BOL BACHCHAN” by Manas, his session was before mine. The session was on “Top 5 Built-in Functions in SQL Server 2012”.
