SQLAuthority News – MVP Summit 2009 – Database Industry Discussion – Live From London Airport and Sheraton Seattle

My regular blog readers must be aware of my tour SQLAuthority News – Author Visit – MVP Global Summit 2009 – Seattle and Redmond. Today I have very interesting day and my tour has converted to technical discussion from the airport itself.

I accidentally met my friend and fellow MVP as well SQL Server Expert Suprotim Agarwal at Mumbai Airport. We will be traveling all the way to Seattle together in same flights. Suprotim is wonderful person to meet as a top notch tech geek of India. We both have same interest and love for technologies.

Suprotim and Pinal at London Airport

We discussed many tech related topics. Below are the top five things which we discussed during our travel to Seattle. I will be writing in depth review for the same when I am back in my town, here are top level points.

1) Database requirement gathering is very importance, however it is usually neglected or just looked at point of view of application only.
2) Database design and architecture should be done by SQL Experts only, however many places it is done by software developer or application developer, which leads to disaster in future (now always).
3) Capacity planning is such a important topic which is avoided to discuss by many expert DBAs as well. Very soon I plan to write in detail query for the same.
4) It is quite common to talk about SQL Server Injection or application security. SQL Server itself provides great feature of auditing and policy management and it should be explored more.
5) It is quite common to do database benchmarking after application is live. In ideal world it should set before designing starts and measured after application is completed. This way it will be clear if benchmarks are met or not.

We discussed many other points besides above 5 points. I will write in detail afterwards. I am also looking forward to my readers comment about above five topics and see what their opinions are.

Blogging Live from London by Pinal Dave

After nearly 35 hours of long journey (actual flying time was about 22 hours), I finally reached Sheraton, Seattle. I met couple of very cool and famous Indian MVPs there. We five MVPs walked down the road and had lots of fun too. It was worth noticing that even though MVPs were discussing fun stuff the geek-ness was very visible. All the talk was always ended with technical discussion. We even talked about how the McDonald’s queue of order can be optimized to why the serving of food by waiters is asynchronous. In any way, I consider myself fortunate to meet this smartest people on earth a day before MVP Summit. We were able to connect very well.
