If you have ever worked with me on Comprehensive Database Performance Health Check, you probably know that I never take access to your server or do not log in to your system. Everything we do is via screen sharing and also I do not look at your personal data. During the engagement, I was very impressed with a client’s efficiency with the Keyboard query shortcuts. I believe not many people use it nowadays so this blog post is a reminder for everyone.

In SQL Server Management Studio if you go to Menubar >> Tools >> Enviroronment >> Keyboard >> Query Shortcuts, you will see an option to configure query shortcuts. Here is a convenient image for it.

On this screen, you can see the shortcuts and various stored procedures list. You can create your custom stored procedures and enter them in front of the shortcut and call them as you need by just typing the keyboard shortcut. Additionally, if you want additional execution options like parameters etc, you can easily do that by selecting the parameter and typing the shortcut. If you want to disable that you can select the checkbox which is right below that with the text “Execute stored procedure shortcuts without additional execution options”.

Well, that’s it. I hope to see more adoption of this feature in the industry. You can always connect with me on Twitter.
