SQL SERVER – 2008 R2 – PowerPivot for Microsoft Excel 2010 – RTM


Microsoft PowerPivot for Microsoft Excel 2010 provides ground-breaking technology, such as fast manipulation of large data sets (often millions of rows), streamlined integration of data, and the ability to effortlessly share your analysis through Microsoft SharePoint 2010.

I have recently started to work with SQL Server 2008 R2 and find the product extremely stable and feature complete. I have installed PowerPivot and I am finding it to be also integrating very well with the product. I recently did one presentations using this two technology and worked very well.

Let me know if you are using PowerPivot for your power BI users. If you are using what is their experience?

  • We did try PowerPivot with Excel and it is an excellent feature and shows the real feel of self service BI. Imagine a business user who knows Excel and have the entire model is available with him. He can definitely start playing around the data and create reports as per his requirements. However, publishing powerpivot on sharepoint is not so seemless. It has pain points and needs lot of effort to put in getting this done. Atleast, this is our experience.

    In our Project we use for Reporting the data from cube .
    But after power pivot has come into limelight we started testing it ,whether power pivot is really suitable for our project . After that we found that power pivot feature is not as good as microsoft said .

    The main Feature of power pivot is it stores all the data in the excel rather than every time requesting the data from the server , like the dataset in .NET. This feature is good but very notable issue is it would take so much of time to create a complex report which is having so many report filters, row labels , column labels and Two or more KPIS ..

    So what we thought is Power pivot has lot of scope to improve to make a key Feature in reporting..
    Thats why we dropped the idea having Power pivot in our excel Reporting.
    May be it would be very useful for share point integration.
