SQLAuthority News – SQL Server Energy Event with Rushabh Mehta – May 20, 2009

The much-awaited SQL Server Energy Event was successfully held on May 20, 2009 in Ahmedabad. It was jointly organized by Gandhinagar SQL Server User Group (President Pinal Dave – SQL MVP) and Ahmedabad SQL Server User Group (President Jacob Sebastian – SQL MVP). This vibrant event was one of the most interactive, remarkable and enriching events of this year in Ahmedabad. Several factors make this event unique. The main attraction of this outstanding event was Rushabh Mehta (SolidQ Mentor – SQL MVP), an eminent expert in the field of Business Intelligence. Technical session from a legend like Rushabh was an opportunity of a lifetime for SQL Enthusiasts in Gujarat. He absolutely mesmerized the participants with his talk and made the event memorable and a runaway success! Further, the event created networking opportunities between user group members.

Rushabh Mehta is a familiar name in SQL Server community and his expertise in the domain of Business Intelligence is commendable. He is a Mentor for Solid Quality Mentors’ global Business Intelligence division, based in USA. He also holds the position of the Managing Director for Solid Quality India Pvt. Ltd. Rushabh has been vigorously working with Microsoft SQL Server platform since 1998. He has been designing and developing large-scale BI systems since 2001, including predictive-analysis systems, healthcare solutions and a multi-terabyte financial decision support system.

We had expected a huge number of people to show up at the event; however, we had made limited arrangements. We had requested the participants to register in advance to get a guaranteed seat. The session commenced with Introduction to SQL Server Energy Event. I gave introduction in my characteristic humorous style and enlivened the event atmosphere. Everybody rolled into laughter when I started introducing Rushabh using images. The introduction ended on a funny note with some of the most hilarious photographs of Rushabh. If you had attended the session you would know what I am talking about. I believe that attending a session physically is far more helpful! It’s actually the whole experience that makes an event special and memorable!

After a short introduction, Rushabh Mehta started his presentation on Navigating through a turbulent economy with Microsoft Business Intelligence, which is a very useful topic in the current economic scenario. Rushabh in his unique interactive style sprinkled with humor kept  the audience engaged throughout his presentation. In the initial minutes of his talk, he brought everybody’s attention to the global problem of recession. Then he directed his talk to the key concepts of Business Intelligence. There were so many things Rushabh covered; however, one thing that was highly appreciated was “Demo of Gemini.” After the demo was over, questions and answers started to flow and it lasted for another hour. Everybody was so curious and wanted to learn from Rushabh as much as possible within the limited timeframe. Jacob Sebastian gave the final thank you note.

We distributed nearly 30 gifts (T-Shirts, Pen, Books, Hats, to name a few.) during presentation. This time all the participants received something. The very much in demand SQL Server Cheet Sheet was the most popular item at this event. You can now download it from here. Organizing such a large event in a very short duration is very arduous and challenging, but I must thank the host of the meeting Digicorpfor promptly arranging all the necessary logistics. Directors of Digicorp were applauded for their continuous help to User Group. The event was followed up with delicious Indian delicacies.

This event was not recorded and is not available online. Please keep on reading this blog and user goup website for similar events like this. We hope Rushabh visits us again very soon and gives us another outstanding session. Please read my previous article for complete profile of Rushabh and the abstract of  his session.

I had requested Rushabh to do session in my user group when we met last time in USA. Last but not the least, I would like to express my sincere thanks to Rushabh: “Thanks Rushabh for keeping your promise!”

SQLAuthority News – SQL Server Energy Event – Mark Your Calendar – May 20, 2009

I am very excited to share this news with all my readers. If you all remember I had already given a hint on my blog just two days back; I mentioned that we are going to host a grand event for Gandhinagar SQL Server User Group. In the past, Gandhinagar SQL Server User Group events have been more successful than we expected. Now, this event will grow even bigger as both Gandhinagar SQL Server User Group (President Pinal Dave – SQL MVP) and Ahmedabad SQL Server User Group (President Jacob Sebastian – SQL MVP) will come together for the event. This upcoming event will be known as SQL Server Energy Event.

This event is going to be one of the biggest events we have organized so far. A renowned international speaker Rushabh Mehta (SolidQ Mentor – SQL MVP) will be joining us for the event. Rushabh is a familiar name in SQL Server community and his expertise in the domain of Business Intelligence is commendable. I am a big fan of him and I have listened to many of his webcasts. In March 2009, I met Rushabh at Microsoft MVP Summit in Seattle. He promised me that he will surely participate in a session for SQL User Group. He has kept his promise and within 2 months of his promise he is here to do a SQL Session with us. This is one of the lifetime opportunities to see him in action in user group. Besides, this is the very first time he will be taking a session in SQL User Group in Gujarat, India. Further, for the very first time in Gujarat three SQL MVPs will be present at one event – Rushabh, Jacob and Pinal. This event is going to be a unique event in every aspect.

Organizing such a large event in a very short duration is very arduous and challenging, but I must thank the host of the meeting Digicorp for promptly arranging all the necessary logistics. This time, there will be take-aways for all the attendees. We will have a wide array of gifts including T-Shirts, Pen, Books, Hats, to name a few. Also, every attendee will surely get the famous SQL Server Cheat Sheet. This cheat sheet became so popular at TechEd that we ran out of them. Here is the opportunity to become a proud owner of a professionally printed cheat sheet, which you can get autographed by any of the available MVPs. What’s more, you can even get yourself photographed with Rushabh. This event will follow up with some light snacks as well. So many interesting things will happen at one event, I am sure you certainly don’t want to miss this opportunity. So make sure not to miss this exciting event!

I am expecting this event to be to be swarming with attendees. If you are interested in participating in this upcoming UG meeting you are requested to register at Gandhinagar SQL Server User Group or send me an email at pinal “at” sqlauthority.com. Registered attendees and those who have sent me email will be guaranteed a place in the meeting and they will also receive  the gifts.

SQLAuthority News – TechEd India 2009 – Day 1 – Authors Tech Session – SQL Server Cheat Sheet – Meeting Great People

First day of TechEd India 2009 is over and when I recall the day I can say that it was truly a blast! This immensely huge and grand event was conducted successfully. I am having a tough time trying to recapitulate the first day as there were several different activities worth covering. Let me start with the three most important events of day.

Steve Ballmer – Microsoft CEO – was the Keynote speaker at TechEd India. He is really an enthusiastic person. As soon as he showed up on stage, the entire auditorium was charged with energy. People were extremely keen to see him and listen to him. He gave a very impressive overview of Microsoft Strategies and its future planning. Listening to him about recession was quite interesting. Steve is a man with wisdom and according to him this is in fact a good time and things will soon improve. With a tinge of humor he said “Recession is life time opportunity and do not miss to learn new things and grow out as stronger person”. Now, you tell me where else you will get to hear optimistic statement like this.

Today, I had a technical session on “SQL Server Management Studio 2008 New Features”. I really enjoyed the presence of participants at my session. The session hall was occupied with SQL enthusiasts who were excited to learn something new. I commenced my session by saying that the session was useful for people who are ever going to touch Management Studio. My session had nearly 9 demos and around 40 slides. Interestingly enough, I proficiently covered everything in less than 40 min, and we had ample time for discussing, addressing future issues with SQL Server, and interacting with SQL Server Product Team of Hyderabad. It may come as a surprise to few but yes, there are an interesting lot of people in SQL Server Product Team in Hyderabad.

Vigorous participation of people made my session interactive throughout. There was a two way communication. Not surprisingly, I received lots of feedback while the session was progressing. At one point, the entire hall was crammed with people and we ran out of chairs. I must thank the team leads Abhishek Kant and Abhishek Baxi for their speedy arrangement of additional chairs to accommodate all the attendees. SQL Server Cheat Sheets, which were prepared along with me by Digi-corp, were available for free pickup. We did not expect that SQL Server Cheat Sheet will become so popular; we ran out of them right during the session. I was able to arrange few of them right away, thanks to the agility of my cooperative wife Nupur, who is also attending TechEd event along with me.

Today, was one of the most important days of my life as I got the opportunity to meet a person I always wanted to meet. Vinod Kumar is a very well-known person in SQL community, and it feels weird to give introduction about him who is a celebrity in his own right. But for those who do not know him, let me introduce him to you. Vinod Kumar is a technical evangelist at Microsoft who is very passionate about community. He is one of the lead organizers of the highly esteemed TechEd India event. I was fortunate to spend time with him today and exchange a few words with him. Vinod is a very down to earth person and refuses to be addressed as “Sir.” He likes to be called just “Vinod.” He gave me many good suggestions, tips and advice. I would like to mention one statement he made -“Just be what you are!”

I attended two TV interviews and one community jam event as well. When I started giving autographs I did not realize when the number crossed 125. It was surprising, exciting and real fun! I will give details about it tomorrow.

Even though today was an action-packed day, I did take about sufficient time to meet few of my MVP fellows. Whenever MVPs meet, we have a great time! It was a pleasure to meet Jacob Sebastian (Beyond Relational), Vikram Pendse (The Silverlight Guru), Suprotim Agrawal (SQL Server Curry), Mahesh Mittkari (Pune UG), Satya (SQL Server Q&A – he came from Scotland to see Steve B and meet us), Amit Bansal (Peopleware India), Mahesh Dhola, Sanjay Shetty (INETA Lead), Ashwin Kini (Culminis Lead), Nauzad Kapadia (Quartz), Niraj (Niraj Rules), Arun (XML Guru), Gitesh Bajaj (PPT God), Hardik Shah (MS), K-Mug Leaders and many more.

Please pardon me if I missed any name. I will update it in my tomorrow’s post with further information about what we talked about and how much we enjoyed together.

Jacob (XML), Pinal (SQL), Vikram (Silverlight)

Back at hotel, I had lip smacking Thai Dinner with my wife. We both are vegetarians so the choice was limited, but nonetheless the food was great.

I’m looking forward to another action-packed day tomorrow. You can follow updates on Twitter here.

SQLAuthority News – Launch of Gandhinagar SQL Server User Group

Gandhinagar SQL Server User Group launch event was held on March 27, 2009. This successful, well-attended event received very positive and warm community response. This launch event, unexpectedly, saw over 50 database enthusiasts participating. It was really a moment of pleasant surprise when we ran out of chairs. The otherwise spacious room started getting smaller as more and more people joined in, and unquestionably, we felt ecstatic about it! Visit Gandhinagar SQL Server User Group Portal and register yourself now!

We commenced Gandhinagar SQL Server User Group launch event sharp at 6:30 and completed it precisely at 7:30. During these 60 minutes we conducted intense database discussion, and we had our share of some light moments as well. As this was the very first launch event, I had the privilege of being the sole speaker for all the sessions.

The agenda of meeting was as follows:

6:30 PM – 7:00 PM – Introduction to Joins and Real Life Scenario
7:00 PM – 7:10 PM – Tips to Improve SQL Performance
7:10 PM – 7:15 PM – Simple SQL Quiz (3 Question)
7:15 PM – 7:20 PM – Feedback
7:20 PM – 7:30 PM – Award for “Best Participant” and Questions and Answer

I had a great time discussing Join and I promised users that I will definitely be sharing some of my slides and scripts from the meeting with everybody. Click here to download slides and script.

One of the requests I received was to write down a simple and precise definition of Joins. I was quite taken aback to see that Joins are still a subject of interest for developers. I am seriously considering this request. To all those developers wanting to get insight into Joins I promise that I will soon come up with a write-up on Introduction to Joins.

I shared some tips on SQL Server performance improvement and even conducted an interesting and informative quiz round. UG members who gave correct answer to the questions received nice gifts. The best part of the event was giveaway of gifts to the participants near the end when everybody was really involved. The gifts included a vibrant red shirt and few other interesting gifts for the best participants. These Gifts were co-sponsored by Digicorp and me.

Here are a few photographs of UG meeting.

My heartfelt thanks go to the sponsor of this event – Digicorp - for their significant contribution to make this event a success. They were extremely prompt in making the last minute arrangements, especially arranging for more chairs for the room which was brimming with participants. Digicorp is a prominent IT service provider and an outsourcing company based in Ahmedabad, India. Its services range from Customized Application Development to Facebook Application Development.

To sum up, I would like to say that there are many advantages of User Group meetings. The prominent advantages are ‘Gaining Knowledge’ and ‘Sharing Knowledge’, which will surely add value to you as a professional or as a knowledge seeker.

Next time, I will be expecting a similar overwhelming response and even more participants to show up in UG meeting.

SQLAuthority Author Visit – A True Outsourcing Giant and Technology Leader DigiCorp in Ahmedabad India

Last week, I happen to visit one of the tech company in Ahmedabad, India. I visit different IT organization for two purpose – learn more about technology advancement in different organization and help them with any issues if they are facing with Microsoft technology and in particular SQL Server. I visited DigiCorp Information Systems Pvt. Ltd. and I was impressed by its technological advancement and exposure to cutting edge technology.

DigiCorp was founded in Jan 2004 and now maintains between 60 and 70 employees in bustling Ahmedabad, India. The company specializes in customized application development in .NET, PHP, Windows Mobile, iPhone and Facebook platforms, particularly for the health care, social networking and social media realms. The success of any company lies when company resources and opportunities are embedded together as one entity where client’s expectations are archived satisfactorily. DigiCorp is one such organization where it is truly achieved.

The reason DigiCorp is not just IT Service Company but it is also forerunner in IT Innovations. Rivals4Ever and Sign in Style are their brain child. DigiCorp are expert in dealing Social Media and Start up companies. The reason this organization is doing better because of its young directors. Four Gujarat University Graduates of year 2003 got together and their joint adventure lead to this Technology Giant IT Leader in India.

What makes DigiCorp ahead in race and different from any other software company is the methodology  it follow to complete any project. From requirement gathering to project delivery everything is closely watched by industry experts. Software architecture is the key to any project’s success and plays vital role in the software development lifecycle. DigiCorp has Project Manager and Team Leaders who are expert in this subject matter and takes their job seriously.

I want to congratulate four directors of DigiCorp - Abhishek Desai, Kuntal Shah, Sanket Patel and Nachiket Patel for building state of art technology firm in India.
