With SQL Server Audit, SQL Server 2008 introduces an important new feature that provides a true auditing solution for enterprise customers. While SQL Trace can be used to satisfy many auditing needs, SQL Server Audit offers a number of attractive advantages that may help DBAs more easily achieve their goals such as meeting regulatory compliance requirements. These include the ability to provide centralized storage of audit logs and integration with System Center, as well as noticeably better performance. Perhaps most significantly, SQL Server Audit permits fine-grained auditing whereby an audit can be targeted to specific actions by a principal against a particular object. This paper provides a comprehensive description of the new feature along with usage guidance and then provides some practical examples.

The new SQL Server Audit feature introduced in SQL Server 2008 represents a significant improvement over the auditing capabilities offered in previous versions of SQL Server. One of the key advancements is the introduction of fine-grained auditing whereby events can be targeted to specific actions on an object by particular principals; the objects can even be scoped down to the individual table level. Performance is another big incentive, because SQL Server Audit performs significantly better than a comparable SQL Trace, up to around 45% in some cases. Additionally, the audit target is no longer confined to just files, because the Windows Application and Security logs are now options. And considering benefits such as persistence of the audit state between instance restarts and the involuntary recording of changes to the audit state, the new SQL Server Audit feature provides a robust and comprehensive auditing solution for the enterprise.

The extension provides a procedural interface for accessing data in all editions of SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008. The SQL Server 2005 Driver for PHP API provides a comprehensive data access solution from PHP, and includes support for many features including Windows Authentication, transactions, parameter binding, streaming, metadata access, connection pooling, and error handling. This paper discusses how to use several of these features by closely examining parts of the Example Application in the SQL Server 2005 Driver for PHP product documentation in MSDN.

Download Logical Query Processing Poster

Earlier this year, I had written article on SQL SERVER – Logical Query Processing Phases – Order of Statement Execution and I had asked one question to readers. I got very good response for this question. Today, I am going to discuss about one of the errata I have made there. I had displayed the Logical Query Processing order, where I had incorrectly listed the last two operations. I have listed the operations as ORDER BY first and TOP afterwards. The fact is that TOP is always executed first and ORDER BY after that.

The correct order of the Logical Query Processing Phases is as follows:

1. FROM
2. ON
3.OUTER
4.WHERE
5.GROUP BY
6.CUBE | ROLLUP
7.HAVING
8. SELECT
9. DISTINCT
10. TOP
11. ORDER BY

This logical order is properly explained by Solid Quality Mentor and SQL Expert Itzik Ben-Gan in Logical Query Processing Phases in his book Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008: T-SQL Querying. This book contains the poster that explains the Logical Query Processing Phases.

Download Logical Query Processing Poster

I had mentioned in the original post that I will give the best explanation of the subject in my blog post with due credit. Following are the excellent comments and explanation received as comments on the blog. I am listing the selected portion from the original comments.

Brian Tkatch

If the query includes an ORDER BY clause, the first expression rows, or expression percent of rows, ordered by the ORDER BY clause are returned. If the query has no ORDER BY clause, the order of the rows is arbitrary.

Mike Walsh

The ORDER BY is ordering your results, it is forcing them to come back in a certain way (contrary to relational theory :) ). The TOP operator is telling SQL Server to restrict the rows returned to a certain number of rows (either explicitly or by percentage). If TOP happened first that would mean you would just be ordering by the number of rows specified in the top.

It would appear as though to do the top it has to know the Order By clause and it needs to understand there is an Order By, and then filter only the top number/percent of rows according to that.

The actual ordering for display or passing on to the next query happens after the TOP filter is applied (even though it looked at the order by).

Bob

In the case of ORDER BY and TOP, that in the absence of an ORDER BY clause, TOP will return arbitrary rows. Therefore, you can consider that ORDER BY precedes TOP when ORDER BY is specified, however, that may not be what actually happens procedurally, just what apparently happens when the results come back.

I am sure that after downloading poster and reading the comments on the original article, it will clarify why TOP operators come earlier than ORDER BY in the query execution plan.

IIS Database Manager allows you to easily manage your local and remote databases from within IIS Manager. IIS Database Manager automatically discovers databases based on the Web server or application configuration and also provides the ability to connect to any database on the network. Once connected, IIS Database Manager provides a full array of management options including managing tables, views, stored procedures and data, as well as running ad hoc queries.

IIS Database Manager provides native support for SQL Server and is also fully extensible for developers to add support for other database systems. In addition, because IIS Database Manager is an extension of IIS Manager, administrators can securely delegate the management of databases to authorized local or remote users, without having to open additional management ports on the server.

Service Broker in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is a new technology that provides messaging and queuing functions between instances. The basic functions of sending and receiving messages forms a part of a “conversation.” Each conversation is considered to be a complete channel of communication. Each Service Broker conversation is considered to be a dialog where two participants are involved.

Service broker find applications when single or multiple SQL server instances are used. This functionality helps in sending messages to remote databases on different servers and processing of the messages within a single database. In order to send messages between the instances, the Service Broker uses TCP/IP.

This transaction message queuing system enables the developers to build secure and reliable applications, which are scalable. The developers can design applications from independent components known as “services.” If the applications need to avail the functionality of these services, then it sends message to the particular “service.”

Loosely coupled applications (programs that exchange messages independently) are supported by the Service broker. The three components of the Service broker are as follows: conversation components (which consist of the conversation groups, conversations and messages); service definition components (which define the conversations); and networking and security components (defines the infrastructure used for exchanging messages between instances)

The maintenance of Service Broker is easy and it is a part of the routine database administration procedure. This is because this functionality forms a part of the Database Engine. Service Broker also provides security by preventing unauthorized access from networks and by message encryption.

Let us understand Service Broker with simple script. Script contains necessary comments to explain what exactly script is doing.

I will write down in detail about my experience at different location. However, today I would like to talk about one particular question which was asked at all the locations. It was about SQL Server Accelerator for Business Intelligence (BI). Many attendee asked me how to use this tool.

SQL Server Accelerator for Business Intelligence (BI) is no more supported by Microsoft. Microsoft does not provide any support for this solution accelerator and has no plans to release future versions. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and later versions include most of the functionality of the accelerator and are supported according to the Microsoft Product Lifecycle.

Microsoft SQL Server StreamInsight is a platform for the continuous and incremental processing of unending sequences of events (event streams) from multiple sources with near-zero latency. These requirements, shared by vertical markets such as manufacturing, oil and gas, utilities, financial services, health care, web analytics, and IT and data center monitoring, make traditional store and query techniques impractical for timely and relevant processing of data.

StreamInsight allows software developers to create innovative solutions in the domain of Complex Event Processing that satisfy these needs. It allows to monitor, mine, and develop insights from continuous unbounded data streams and correlate constantly changing events with rich payloads in near real time. Industry specific solution developers (ISVs) and developers of custom applications have the opportunity to innovate on and utilize proven, flexible, and familiar Microsoft technology and rely on existing development skills when using the StreamInsight platform.

I recently read this very interesting white paper. I really found it very interesting as this one was one very easy to read and humourous white paper related to SQL Server. The white paper is starts with very interesting note regarding Columbus.

Contrary to popular opinion, Columbus did not prove that the Earth is round. Pythagoras, Plato, and Aristotle claimed a round Earth based on philosophic and observational grounds. More impressively, Eratosthenes measured the Earth’s circumference around 240 B.C., a measurement which comes amazingly close to modern values—within 17 percent when taking pessimistic conversions into account and perhaps 2 percent if we’re more generous.

After the introductory humorous start, this white paper right away go to the point asking question.

If we all agree that the world is round, why would anyone willfully flatten it?

This white paper continues to discuss other important feature of SQL Server with regards to flat map and continuously keep on enhancing knowledge as easy read.

Read white paper here.

Change Data Capture records INSERTs, UPDATEs, and DELETEs applied to SQL Server tables, and makes a record available of what changed, where, and when, in simple relational ‘change tables’ rather than in an esoteric chopped salad of XML. These change tables contain columns that reflect the column structure of the source table you have chosen to track, along with the metadata needed to understand the changes that have been made. Pinal Dave explains all, with plenty of examples in a simple introduction.

SQL Server 2008 R2 introduces new management tools to help improve IT efficiency and productivity. Investments in application and multi-server management will help organizations proactively manage database environments efficiently at scale through centralized visibility into resource utilization. Such investments can help streamline consolidation and upgrade initiatives across the application lifecycle—all with tools that make it fast and easy.

This paper introduces the new extensions in SQL Server Management Studio and the Control Point Explorer, and it walks through the simple process of setting up a SQL Server managed server group, including SQL Server Control Point installation, enrolling an instance into central management, extracting Data-tier Applications from existing deployments, and deploying Data-tier Applications to the new managed server group.

There are several goals of this white paper. This paper explains how SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 allocate memory for plan caching, how query batches are cached and suggests best practices on maximizing reuse of cached plans. It also explains scenarios in which batches are recompiled, and gives best practices for reducing or eliminating unnecessary recompilations and for minimizing plan cache pollution. The white paper explains SQL Server’s “statement-level recompilation” feature (first introduced in SQL Server 2005) and many tools and utilities that are useful as observation tools in the processes of query compilation, query recompilation, plan caching, and plan reuse.

This paper targets these audiences:

Users: Persons who use, maintain, and develop applications for SQL Server. Users who are new to SQL Server 2008 and those who are migrating from SQL Server 2005 will find useful information here.

Developers: SQL Server developers will find useful background information here.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 introduced the concept of database object schemas. Schemas are analogous to separate namespaces or containers used to store database objects. Security permissions apply to schemas, making them an important tool for separating and protecting database objects based on access rights. Schemas reduce the work required, and improve the flexibility, for security-related administration of a database.

This white paper discusses the opportunities for improvements in the security administration of a user database, and it outlines some best practices around using schemas to manage database objects in development and production databases. Specifically, it addresses three real-world scenarios:

Protecting database objects from being altered by users without the knowledge of the database owner

Preventing database base objects, independent software vendor (ISV) databases in particular, from ad hoc or incorrect user access leading to poor application performance

Bringing related groups of objects (logical entities) together within one physical database to reduce physical database administrative overhead

Guide to Migrating from MySQL to SQL Server 2008
In this migration guide you will learn the differences between the MySQL and SQL Server 2008 database platforms, and the steps necessary to convert a MySQL database to SQL Server.

Guide to Migrating from Oracle to SQL Server 2008
This white paper explores challenges that arise when you migrate from an Oracle 7.3 database or later to SQL Server 2008. It describes the implementation differences of database objects, SQL dialects, and procedural code between the two platforms. The entire migration process using SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) 2008 for Oracle is explained in depth, with a special focus on converting database objects and PL/SQL code.

Guide to Migrating from Informix to SQL Server 2008
This white paper explores challenges that arise when you migrate from an Informix 11 database to SQL Server 2008. It describes the implementation differences of database objects and procedural code between the two platforms. Emulation of system functions is also discussed.

Guide to Migrating from Sybase ASA to SQL Server 2008
This white paper explores challenges that arise when you migrate from a Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere (ASA) database of version 9 or later to SQL Server 2008. It describes the implementation differences of database objects, SQL dialects, and procedural code between the two platforms.

Guide to Migrating from Sybase ASE to SQL Server 2008
This white paper covers known issues for migrating Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise database to SQL Server 2008. Instructions for handling the differences between the two platforms are included.

The SQL Server Management Pack provides the capabilities for Operations Manager 2007 to discover SQL Server 2000, 2005 and 2008 installations and components and to monitor them, primarily from the perspective of availability and performance. The availability and performance monitoring is done using a combination of scripts and native Operations Manager capabilities.

The following list gives an overview of the features of the SQL Server management pack.

Support for Enterprise, Standard and Express editions of SQL Server 2000, 2005 and 2008 and 32bit, 64bit and ia64 architectures.

Support for both simple and complex SQL configurations such as clustered installations, multiple instances and 32bit roles running on a 64bit OS. For full details on supported configurations refer to the guide included with the management pack.

Discovery and monitoring of SQL Server roles such as DB Engine, Reporting Services, Analysis Services, Integrations Services.

Discovery of SQL components such as databases, the SQL Agent and SQL jobs.

Over 20 views covering areas such as database free space, SQL related performance, SQL related alerts, and lists of the various SQL roles and components which are discovered and their related state.

Reports for longer-term analysis of common problem areas related to SQL Server such as SQL Server lock analysis and top deadlocked databases, SQL Server service pack levels across discovered roles, user connection activity. Likewise the generic reports from the Microsoft Generic Report Library can be used against the roles and components discovered by the SQL MPs to review availability and performance across many systems and over longer periods of time.

Role and component specific tasks which provide access to common tools, triage information, or corrective actions without needing to leave the Operations Console in most cases.

Monitoring of databases covers database status, database free space, log shipping monitoring for both the source and destination, and transaction log free space.

Monitoring of key SQL related services.

Monitoring for persistent SPID blocking.

Monitoring of numerous SQL events and performance data points. Alerts bring the issue to your attention and provide knowledge on the impact and possible resolutions.
