I have previously documented my four-day experience of SQL PASS 2009 Summit at Seattle. There were many reasons for SQL enthusiasts to attend the SQL PASS event; I am listing my own reasons here in order of importance to me.

Networking with SQL fellows and experts

Putting face to the name or avatar

Learning and improving my SQL skills

Understanding the structure of the largest SQL Server Professional Association

Attending my favorite training sessions

During these four days, there was so much happening that it is difficult to document everything. I had tried to cover this event briefly on a daily basis in the following blog posts:

SQLAuthority News – SQL PASS Summit, Seattle 2009 – Day 1

I will list a few of the additional details that I have not included in the earlier post. Keynotes were the best part of the event, and I have covered major points of the keynote in above mentioned posts. I had met many SQL Legends during this event and included information regarding them. However, there were few things I still missed and I am listing them here. Seattle is great city, and I am visiting it the second time. This time I got an opportunity to take the Underground city tour and I had really enjoyed.

It was great to meet SQL Server MVP Glenn Berry at the MVP Summit. He is a very kind and friendly person. You will always find him hanging around with people from different organizations and countries. If you try to eavesdrop his conversation, you will hear terms like ‘dmv’, ‘performance’, and ‘optimized query’ very often. He is very much known for his excellent optimization script known as “SQL Server 2008 Diagnostic Information Queries“. If you have never taken a look at that, I urge you to go there and check this out. I believe that even if he blogs once a year only with this script, his fans will not complain. I have previously published his interview on my blog. Please note that he is the only person ever featured in an interview on this blog.

It depends! This is one most loved (or hated) phrase in the world of programmers or DBA. It is quite common to start answering question using this phrase. Mostly, this phrase initiates humor but rarely, people take this as offence. Again the intent of speaker is not always conveyed properly, it depends on how the phrase is used (I could not resist to use this phrase as well :P). I had very interesting discussion with Michelle Ufford and Jason Strate when we were waiting for coffee at one afternoon. We discussed both the sides of this phrase. Michelle suggested many good points when and why this phrase is valid. Jason also suggested that this phrase is commonly used a) when the presenter does not have sufficient information to answer or b) when the presenter does not know the answer. We discussed that it would be really interesting to start the conversation answering the most possible answer and then talking about special cases (for which it depends is quite commonly used.) Let us see one example.

Q: Does index improve performance?
A1: It depends on query and data you have.
A2: Usually YES; however, there are cases when it reduces performance, for which the query and data needs to be examined carefully.

There are times when it depends totally make sense. I use it several times; I love the blog of Andy Warren which talks is branded as it depends. This discussion between three of us was just a friendly discussion, and if you think we are talking about you, it is wrong!

During this event, I had great conversation with SQL Legend Buck Woody. This man is full of energy and may be the most loved person in this summit. His session was the funniest session I have ever attended. At the end of his session, I had more than 2 pages of my notebook filled with notes. If I have wrote down how many times, I have laughed loudly, I would have no time to do anything else. Buck had a good hour of discussion with me. We discussed many different topics, ranging from Community to Microsoft and Collage Students to SQL. I am very thankful to Buck for spending his valuable time with me – I am honored.

Joe Celko – this name is very popular in SQL world, and I admit that I was always afraid of him. Every time I see his photo, I just felt nervous. I never thought that I should meet him. Honestly, for the same reason, I did not attend his session. I was absolutely wrong. I met him right after his session was over. He is one of the most friendly people I have met in my life. He is very soft spoken. He gauges the level and understanding of other person and speaks at the same level. He made me laugh and taught many good techniques for how to become good speaker and presenter. When I said I was sorry that I was scared of him, he laughed and said that he knows this. Boy, what a mistake I did!! I should have attended his session. Well, at least I am accepting my mistake here. He is indeed a very friendly soul. He promised me that one time he will come to India.

Brian Moran is the newly elected board member; I would like to call him as ‘the Man with 1000 successful ideas‘. You have to come across him to know what I am talking about. I had the great opportunity to meet him and discuss few things, besides SQL. Brian had many excellent ideas about how to build the community, how to help SQL PASS and few excellent ideas about how to take PASS to the next level. I am glad that he is one of the board members for PASS. PASS is all about passion, and Brian clearly demonstrates the same.

I met all of them and had a great conversation with them. It was great to meet Ed Hackney; he is a wonderful person and very easily approachable. He talked about SQL community in India and how any community cannot be restrained within geographical boundaries.

I was waiting to meet Thomas LaRock. He is an excellent SQL Master, and he talked in detail about outsourcing SQL technology and SQL community. I really enjoyed meeting him and spending some time with him during the summit. I plan to learn more from him when I meet him next time.

Robert Cain, he is one of the very few SQL masters, who have expertise in .net and Business Intelligence at the same time. I have previously wrote about him in Big Thinkers – Robert Cain.
I have previously written a lot about Greg Low on this blog. However, I just can not resist to put this excellent photo once again here. He has great respect for the international community; and he had spent some quality time with me discussing how to enhance and grow the global community. Greg gave his insight and few plan cache tips as well. You can read my review of his book ‘Book Review – The Rational Guide to Building Technical User Communities (Rational Guides)‘.
Now I am coming to the most interesting part of my experience. I want to introduce to all of you the youngest SQL PASS fan and follower. Her name is Shaivi Dave, and she is big fan of SQL PASS!

PASS President Wayne Snyder honored and thanked Kevin Kline for his 10 YEARS of service.

Kevin then gets a well-deserved standing ovation from the entire audience.

Next year’s PASS Summit will be in Seattle from November 8 to 11, 2010.

Dell Key note was little flat in delivery. Dell was primary sponsor for the event.

Dr. David DeWitt, Technical Fellow, Data & Storage Platform Division at Microsoft starts presentation entitled “From 1 to 1000 MIPS.” One of the best sessions I ever had in my life.

The keynote was followed by several meetings. There was lot of food, drinks and entertainment all around. I received so much swag that I had to get brand new bag to contain the same. I will post the photos of the stuff that received once I reach home. I will be heading towards airport in next 15 minutes. So, I will be disconnected from the Internet for 36 hours once I board the flight. I am uploading only 2–3 photos at this moment. Check here again as I have nearly 30 more photos to share.

The third day at SQL PASS Summit was education + entertainment day for me. During the last 10 days, I woke up at 4:00 AM regularly. However, as I had way too much fun yesterday at various parties earlier, I did not get up till 7:30 AM. By the time I woke up, I realized that I was late for my early breakfast meeting with Solid Quality Global Mentors. I somehow managed to reach there at 8:00 AM and we talked for nearly an hour. After the meeting, I headed to Keynote. Keynote is the best time of the day and wanton one wants to miss it.

I actively cover all my activities on twitter. So do follow me on twitter for the updates!

Today’s Keynote was extremely entertaining and educating. Audience was seen having a great time at various demos. I wished that all our technical sessions should be like this session as it was one of the excellent demos. Let us see few quick notes from the Keynote.

Rushabh Mehta – President Elect started the keynote asking humorous question why there is no free drink at PASS and explained the budget

Projected revenues in FY 2010 are $3.2 million, a 15% drop in revenues, while there was a 40% increase in community spending. There was 67% reduction in IT expenses

Jacob Sebastian, the PASS Outreach Program leader, was recognized for his excellent leadership

Charley Hanania and Allen Kinsel won PASSion Award

Tom Casey, GM, Business Intelligence and Amir Netz presented excellent demos and future vision

Power pivot demos were excellent and warmly welcomed by community

Touchscreen Powerpivot demo was the major highlight of the Keynote

I attended technical session of Rushabh Mehta (President Elect for PASS, SQL Server MVP and CEO, Solid Quality India). He talked about ‘Overcome SSIS Deployment and Configuration Challenges’. Now, who knew that it would be very humorous session? Rushabh started the session with reference to the movie ‘What About Bob?’ and kept the whole session as story line of the movie. Many of us will agree that subjects like SSIS, deployment issues and configuration complexity are very dry subjects. However, with audience interaction and the presentation of this technically complex subject in simple words, the whole session was the highlight of the day. I confess that I am expert in BI, but not someone who knew it inside out. In fact, I am intrigued to learn more about this particular subject after attending this excellent session. I have requested Rushabh to spend some time with me and explain the extension of this subject.

I had many different meetings scheduled today. All of them were successful. I managed to run around the exhibition hall and meet many different MS vendors. I really enjoyed meeting them and I also learned about the upcoming technology. One of the vendors really impressed me with an excellent demo; I have requested the full evaluation version for their software. If they provide me the same, I will try that out and post my review here soon. If their software meets my expectations I have built after seeing the demo, I will sincerely wish to see them go mainstream with that product.

During evening, I had two different parties to attend and both party were rockstar party. It is so interesting that no matter how many different parties we go, we usually find the same people walking around. I found very strong presence of Microsoft in both the parties. Party hosted by Solid Quality Mentors had excellent food and drinks. I met many different SQL Experts there and we did NOT talk SQL. It was party and time to relax! As there was such a fun, I was late to attend the party of Microsoft which was hosted at Gameworks. Everybody went crazy with the games. Lots of game, food and drinks again here as well.

I just enjoyed the third day of the summit. Just one more day to go – I just wish this summit never ends. However, I strongly miss my family and especially my 2-month old daughter (and wife! – i know its clichéd but its true!!).

The second day of PASS started with very engaging and it started with an original game invented by Stuart Ainsworth. This game involves finding twitter people in real life. As I was not one of the square in bingo, I had decided to participate in game myself and try to win if I can. During this process, I felt guilty that I borrowed a pen from Stuart and did not return it back. In fact, after a while someone took the pen from me and never returned it. It is true that karma pays off! I should have returned it right away.

Well one very first thing in the day was having breakfast with SQL friends. I met few more celebrities and Arnie Rowland again, who is a genius and very friendly. We all headed towards Keynote at around at 10 PM. The Keynote was great; it started with very interesting details. The current PASS President presented few photos before starting the session. They are as follows:

Year 2009 PASS registration is 2,200 for the full day event

24 hours of PASS had 50,123 session registrations from 3,524 people of 70+ countries

SQL Server Standard is coming back

Microsoft’s Bob Muglia talked about SQL Server on the very first day and its future, and he covered few interesting demos as well

Microsoft’s Ted Kummert talked about PASS and reasons to attend PASS. He also presented few testimonies from the customers and interesting demos

Once the session was over, I headed to SQLFool aka Michelle Ufford’s session on Index Optimization session. As I mentioned earlier, she is one expert who should be respected for her extraordinary skills for index optimization.

During lunch we had wonderful event called Features of Birds MVP Lunch. During this event, I talked about Change Data Capture (CDC). I was very fortunate that many people showed up at my table. I really hoped that I could have accommodated everybody; however, the table capacity was only 10. I promise to all of those who missed that I will do special online session.

Michelle’s session was followed up by Jacob Sebastian’s session. This session was attended by a large group of XML fans. Just like any other session of Jacob, this session was very well received, and he got a lot of good feedback. Jacob is officially the human XML.

After these two back–to-back sessions, I felt that I have learned quite a lot for one day. With that confidence, I went to exhibition hall. In the hall, I met so many really cool people whom I always wanted to meet. I also received a lot of giveaways at the expo – 9 T-Shirts, 3 candy boxes, 1 tote bag, and 2 sweet little ducks. I am sure Shaivi (my two-month-old daughter) is going to love those little ducks.

In the evening, Microsoft threw a very interesting party for all the Microsoft MVPs and it was great fun. Jacob and I were almost lost our way to the party location. We had to hire taxi to reach the location. The taxi driver asked us so many questions that we felt like we were at the prison interrogation location. However, the journey (which seemed a year long) was less than a mile! I met many friends and MS employees there. It was a very great place for interacting with everyone.

Day 1 at PASS was awesome. I usually write everything in detail when I have to cover any project. This time, I have decided to cover this event little bit differently and with lots of images. For day 1, I have more than 90 photos taken with many SQL celebrities and different sessions. I will be not able to cover all the photos taken today in this post. I will gradually post all the photos as I will do follow up posts. In this post, I will cover my activities on day 1 as well few of the photos that give you a visual tour of the spot that I have covered in one day.

Yesterday I went to city tour where I had walked on the streets of Seattle and had lots of fun. I went on an underground tour in Seattle and then got back to registration desk for registration. Day 1 started great; while I was going to checkout the venue, I had meet Blythe Morrow on my way to Seattle Convention Center. I consider this as great start of SQL PASS event as she has put in considerable work to make this event a success.

Bill, Blythe, Pinal

Being a vegetarian, thus far I have never faced any difficulties finding good food in USA.

Veg Maxican Meal

Not every one know that the name “Seattle”is native American name, and it was taken from the name of the Native American tribe chief, Seattle. Please visit this wiki article to read further on Seattle City.

Chief Seattle

I was also mesmerized with the set up at SQL Pass Summit. SQL PASS Head Quarter has put in considerable efforts in making this event successful.

I met many of the SQL celebrities during my very first day. As I mentioned earlier, I managed to click around 80 photos of the legends. I will share all of them soon.

PASS event is a community event, and the community is heavily encouraged. I was very fortunate to meet two of the very active community leaders in my meeting. They amaze me with their dedication to help the SQL Server Community: Joe Webb and Arnie Rowland.

Community Leads – Joe Webb, Pinal Dave and Arnie Rowland

I have previously mentioned that if I want to be like someone in SQL Community, it would be Steve Jones. He is the founder and current manager for the extremely popular site SQLServerCentral.com. The reason I aspire to be like him is that he is a very nice down-to-earth person who is always smiling. I also attended his SSC Party on day 1.

I have mentioned about Brent Ozar several times on our blog. He is the only person with spectacles besides me in following image. I have been very eager to meet him for many years and early morning, I got the opportunity to have breakfast with him and many other SQL Celebrities. I will write in detail about other members in the image in a separate blog post.

As mentioned earlier in a blog post SQL SERVER – Advanced T-SQL with Itzik Ben-Gan – A Dream Coming True, I got the wonderful opportunity to attend the course of Itzik Ben-Gan. Itzik is one of the true masters of SQL Server, and his fame had set my expectations quite high. The most interesting aspect is that I have taught a similar course in India several times, and I was quite familiar with all the slides and examples. As I already knew a lot about this course, I was wondering if I would be able to enjoy the class or learn something new. The reality is I learned alot of new things.

Overall, this class delivers quality training way more than what we expect. Learning the course from Itzik is a great experience. In the last five days, I have learned several new things. In fact, I felt that if I attend the class again, I can for surely learn more. Itzik suggested so many useful tips, which really impressed me.

Let me list a few of those tips here:

When TOP is used along with 100% and ORDER BY clause in table expressions (view, CTE), the ORDER BY clause is ignored.

For only two tables, both JOIN and SubQuery can be the optimal solution.

You can use TOP to gradually delete a table with millions of rows.

Understanding the instances when Index Scan is faster to retrieve data than Index Seek.

Power up analysis of data without using analysis service and grouping set features.

Trivial plan does not look for index selectivity.

This class was on Advanced T-SQL Server 2008, and it was faithful to the concept. Itzik has a very interesting way of delivering the sessions. His course and sessions are perfectly managed, and the learning topics are very well paced. All the sessions are perfectly timed and very interesting. All the sessions are followed up with exercise and lab. Itzik takes a good amount of time to explain the Hands on lab, which is very helpful.

There are 10 different advance T-SQL sessions, and they are covered very well. I enjoyed each session and learned a lot of new concepts. Few things are difficult to put in writing, and Itzik has effectively discussed many concepts like that.

To top these, all the attendees were given two different books written by Itzik for FREE!

I think this five-day training was one of the best training sessions I have ever had in this subject. A large number of concepts were covered in this training. If I get a chance to attend this course again, I will surely not miss it as I do not want to let go of the opportunity to learn from Itzik at any cost.

I express my special thanks to Itzik Ben-Gan for accepting my registration at the last moment even though the seats were full, as well as to Rushabh Mehta for making this happen for me.

During the class, Itzik invited me for dinner to Maggiano, an excellent place for Italian cuisines. Two other excellent Solid Quality Mentors also joined us for dinner – Greg Low and Peter Myers. I was extremely delighted to have these top-notch industry experts around me talking SQL. I consider myself fortunate to have dinner with them and to have spent Solid Quality time with them.

If you are in waiting list for the course and want to get into the class earlier than your schedule, please feel free to email me and I will help you as much as I can.

I am immensely enjoying the class, and I shall post details about the class once it is over.

If you are attending SQL PASS and interested to meet me, I will be present at Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF) Lunch. I will be talking on the subject Change Data Capture (CDC). Please note that this lunch is for all of us; moreover, it is not necessary that I will be talking on only subject of Change Data Capture. In fact, I will talk about this subject for few minutes, and then we can discuss on any topic you want to know about. The table will have total of 10 seats (which includes my seating).

We can all have an effective small group conversation on SQL, SQL PASS, and the entire community. You are welcome to join me at lunch. Please read the complete details about the same here.

As PASS is now one week away and I am all excited for the same. I am going to attend following two sessions for sure. I encourage all of you to also visit the same sessions. We can all talk about SQL , SQL Integration as well Beyond Relations.

First sessions I will be attending of Rushabh Mehta, he is Managing Director of Solid Quality India.

Overcoming SSIS Deployment and Configuration Challenges

Presenter:
Rushabh Mehta (Solid Quality Learning)

Session Details

It is no secret that a main deficiency of SSIS is deployment. Have you wanted to punch a wall before when trying to move a package from one server to another? You’re not alone. This session will be more than just SSIS deployment anger management. We’ll look at how to overcome the deployment challenges by considering configurations, package and connection security, and deployment approaches. And don’t miss the decision workflows that will help you down the right path on choosing the right storage and deployment approaches depending on your situation!

Second sessions I am going to attend of Jacob Sebastian, he is founder of BeyoundRelational.com.

SQL Server 2008 – Create powerful XML Schema collections to validate your XML documents

Presenter:
Jacob Sebastian (beyondrelational.com)

Session Details

XML is getting more widely used both inside and outside SQL Server. Stored procedures and functions that accept XML parameters or generate XML documents are part of almost every database project these days. When information is exchanged in XML format, there needs to be an agreement between the sender and receiver about the structure and content of the XML document. Using an XSD (XML Schema Definition) Schema, you can validate the structure and content of an XML document. SQL Server introduced XML Schema Collections in SQL Server 2005 and added a number of enhancements in SQL Server 2008. An XML data type variable or column that is bound to an XML Schema collection is called TYPED XML. When a TYPED XML column or variable is modified, SQL Server will validate perform the validations defined in the SCHEMA Collection and the operation will succeed only if the validation succeeds. In this session we will discuss SQL Server XML Schema collections and see how to create powerful XML Schema Collections to validate XML documents with diverse structure and content.

I am also preparing my schedule as I want to attend almost all the sessions as I can. Please read following related post about SQL PASS.

PASS Summit 2009 is now only 10 days away and I am very excited for the same. I can not wait to attend the summit as this is the most awaited conference of SQL Server in world. Everybody will be there and there will be something for everybody. My core expertise is in Query Optimization and Performance Tuning area, and when I see the list of PASS session on the subject, I am totally speechless. There are so many great speaker at PASS who are there to talk on the subject.

It is absolutely not possible to attend all of them many of them are running parallel to each other. In any case, I strongly suggest if you are the expert who try till last bit to optimize the query and performance, I expect you to attend many of the following session. There is always option to get recorded DVD for the sessions afterwords.

You can read my article here regarding Why I am Going to Attend PASS Summit Unite 2009- Seattle.

Community TechDays at Ahmedabad was a great successful event. In fact, this can be considered the biggest event held in Ahmedabad thus far along with community. This event was held by Microsoft and PASS (Professional Association of SQL Server). The goal of this event was to dive deep into the world of Microsoft technologies and get trained on the latest from Microsoft. Well, we could successfully achieve the same and build real connections with Microsoft experts and community members. I suggest you all to register at http://ahmedabad.sqlpass.org or http://gandhinagar.sqlpass.org for future notification of similar events.

This event was attended by more than 250+ attendees at any moment, and a total of 300+ attendees for the entire day. We were very fortunate to have such a large technical attendance during the long weekend. Another reason for the success of this event was the impressive line-up of prominent speakers. Ahmedabad, a “small” city in terms of technology, has proved two times in a row that we have much larger technology community than many other prominent cities in India, or in fact the world.

During the session, the hall was jam-packed and with no vacant seats. We are thankful to all those volunteers who offered their seats to the attendees. I am also proud of my UG members who have worked day and night to ensure that this event is a successful one. If you want to be part of UG, please leave a comment here or mail me.

The major attraction of this event was the sessions from Vinod Kumar – Microsoft Evangelist, who is known for his famous SQL site http://extremeexperts.com. UG members of Ahmedabad were looking forward for this session from a long time. The entire SQL Community knows Vinod for his top-notch SQL Sessions. However, while we were deciding the agenda, he suggested that as Jacob Sebastian and myself are local SQL Experts, we should conduct the SQL Session in Ahmedabad. Instead of conducting an SQL Session, he decided to conduct a session on Windows 7 and Office 2010.

Well, I must say that it was a great session! Vinod’s session, which was initially planned for 2 hours, had to be continued after the stipulated time because the attendees would not let him go. This excellent session, which went on for 3 hours, was very well received and none of the attendees moved from their seats. In fact, to end the session, Vinod had to promise everyone that he will be visiting Ahmedabad again.

The excellent morning session by Vinod was followed up by two back-to-back SQL sessions. The first Session was conducted by Pinal Dave (myself), and the subject was very well received. I had presented on the subject – ‘SQL Server – The Other Side of Index’; it was really interesting to explain this subject. Professionally, I have been working for SQL Server optimization and query tuning for a long time, and I have created this session from my real world experience. Quite often, I have seen developers with a wrong understanding of an Index and its utilization. I explained four major concepts of the Index in my session.

My session was followed by another most awaited session of the day, which was conducted by Jacob Sebastian, who is an SQL Server MVP and also my friend. He presented the session on a very unique subject. Jacob talked about ‘The Best Practices for Exception Handling and Defensive Programming in Microsoft SQL Server’. This session was the most interactive session of the day. If you have missed this session, then you have surely missed the most interesting session. Jacob talked about so many different myths of proper coding and transaction error handling. He also talked about different techniques that can defend the developer for future errors or improper coding.

This session was followed by very active Prabhjot Singh Bakshi, an MCT. Prabhjot’s session was about .NET Framework 4.0. The .NET Framework 4.0 works side by side with the .NET Framework version 3.5 SP1. Applications that are based on the earlier versions of the .NET Framework will continue to run on that version. Only a subset of functionality is shared by all versions of the .NET Framework.

Prabhjot Singh Bakshi

Usually, for such events, the post-lunch sessions will have fewer crowds than those in morning sessions. Surprisingly, here we had a large number of SQL enthusiasts attending this event throughout the day. At the end of the session, we had more than 300+ attendees. There were many attendees who waited outside the hall in order to converse with the speakers. I am very much thankful to all the attendees who made this event a great success.

I also would like to thank two more people who were not present at the session, but without their continuous support and help, this event would not have materialized: Pradipta Sharma of Microsoft, who was in charge of this event, and Ashwin Kini, who coordinated this event with utmost dedication. Ashwin and Pradipta, thanks a lot for your support!

Overall, this was the biggest and brightest community event in the history of Ahmedabad.

Microsoft Community Tech Days are here! Dive deep into the world of Microsoft technologies at the Community TechDays and get trained on the latest from Microsoft.

Community Tech Days are coming to Ahmedabad on Oct 3, 2009. I will be presenting the session ‘SQL Server 2008 – The Other Side of Index’. I will be talking about the other side of Index where we will be thinking out of the typical way of creating Indexes. Take a look at the following common conversation.

Person 1: My Query is running slow.
Person 2: How about create an index on it?
Person 1: Good point!

Every time I listen to such conversations, I sense a lack of complete understanding on how the Index affects performance. I will be starting the session with the above mentioned conversation and will continue to explain how index and performance are related. We will not talk about the regular creation of index but will explore the different sides of Index. We will also discuss about common concepts that are related to index, such as deadlock, execution plan, indexed view, and few other issues. I assure you that this whole session will be a two-way interaction between the attendees and me.

Again, we will have a lot of interesting demos, examples and conversations. If you have not registered for this event, I suggest that you do the same right away.

Please note that there is no video recording of this event or live telecast. This event should be attended in person.

I am not only attending this event to deliver my tech session, but also to listen to two of my colleagues.

I am an avid listener of Vinod Kumar’s sessions and I make sure that I do not miss any of them. I always feel that he is capable of instilling his passion in all who listen. He is well known for his community site ExtremeExperts.com and also is the top evangelist from Microsoft. He will be presenting two excellent sessions. I am looking forward to listen both the sessions – Tips and Tricks with Office 2010 and Windows 7 – A Dream Operating System for IT Professionals.

Jacob Sebastian is an SQL Server MVP and also my friend. We work together on all the community-related aspects. We are leaders of Ahmedabad SQL Server User Group and Gandhinagar SQL Server User Group. Jacob is going to speak at PASS Global Summit in November 2009. He will be presenting an excellent session on the Best Practices for Exception Handling and Defensive Programming in Microsoft SQL Server.

I insist all of you to register for this event to make the maximum use of it. We can meet after the session and talk about some good SQL.

It is very fortunate of Ahmedabad that Vinod Kumar is going to present his very first session along with local MVP speakers. I strongly suggest that you must not miss this unique opportunity to meet and learn first hand from him.

Glenn Berry works as a Database Architect at NewsGator Technologies in Denver, CO. He is a SQL Server MVP, and has a whole collection of Microsoft certifications, including MCITP, MCDBA, MCSE, MCSD, MCAD, and MCTS. He is also an Adjunct Faculty member at University College – University of Denver, where he has been teaching since 2000. He is one wonderful blogger and often blogs at here.

1) Please tell us something about yourself.
I have been working as a Database Architect at NewsGator Technologies for about 3.5 years. Before that, I worked as a Performance Architect at a company called Mortgage Cadence for about four years. I have also been teaching SQL Server classes at night at University of Denver – University College for ten years. I have a couple of miniature Dachshunds, who are like my children.

2) We all know that you work as NewsGator, tell us something about your prime responsibility?
Well, my job title is Database Architect, but I am really the only database type person in the entire company. I pretty much have to do it all, from designing our architecture to writing stored procedures, to making sure our backup jobs are running. The good thing about that is that I get to stay hands on with SQL Server, which I really enjoy.

3) What would you like to call yourself – a Production DBA, a Database Architecture, A Database Developer or something else?
I end up doing both Database Development and Database Administration, along with the overall architecture. I call myself a Database Architect because it seems like the best overall description.

4) What is the largest size of database you have handled and what was your role with that database?
Our largest database is about 4TB (after Page Compression in SQL Server 2008). We currently have about 8TB of data between all of our production SQL Server instances.

5) NewsGator must have TB of data and millions of transactions a min. Would you please tell something about infrastructure?
We have about 8TB of data, which is really not that large by SQL Server 2008 standards. We are using pretty low-end, commodity hardware (no HP Superdomes here!). We are running completely on SQL Server 2008 in Production since February 2009. We were in the Katmai Technology Assistance Program (TAP), which was a private, external beta for SQL Server 2008, which helped us get a head start on getting SQL Server 2008 deployed very quickly. We are using Windows Server 2008 for all of our database servers, and we have had very good luck with that.

We have to run 24 x 7 x 365, with no regular maintenance windows. Because of this, we are using database mirroring on all of our mission critical databases, which works very well for us. We even used database mirroring to upgrade each of our production SQL Server 2005 databases to SQL Server 2008 with less than 30 second outages.

6) Tell us 3 most important tips for SQL Server.
It is very important to know your environment and workload (from a SQL Server perspective). That way, you will recognize when something has changed, and you will be able to make better decisions in a crisis situation. It is also important to stay current with what is going on with the latest hardware (I read tech enthusiast sites like AnandTech and Tom’s Hardware), so that you can do a good job selecting and sizing hardware. Too many DBAs just blindly trust their I.T. department to select hardware.

7) People call you the most friendliest MVP of all. Why?
I do know a lot of the other SQL MVP’s, and I guess that I have managed to avoid offending anyone so far. I was recently renewed for my third year as a SQL MVP, so I must be doing something right. I was lucky enough to be chosen to present two Community Sessions at this year’s PASS summit, so hopefully I will meet many more SQL Server people in the future.

8) Tell us something about yourself, which is not commonly known.
I like to read military history and science fiction. Long ago, I was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. I was a tank commander in an M60A1 Rise\Passive tank. I think that military experience is very useful for a DBA, since it helps teach you to be disciplined, detail-oriented, and prepared for anything.

Microsoft India has organized a premier online technical event Microsoft Virtual TechDays between August 19-21, 2009. I had presented two technical sessions and they were greatly received by audience. I had received 50+ request for providing PPT for all the attendees. It was great FREE event and I suggest that everybody should have attended the event. While I was at Bangalore, I had great time meeting fellow experts and top evangelist from Microsoft.

Presenting online event is totally different experience than presenting in front of real people in User Groups. In user group meeting it is very easy to get feedback from users regarding if they have understood the subject or not. However, on online presentation event, it is difficult to figure sense that if users are able to understand the concept or not. Well, this really tests speaker’s skill regarding understanding the technical subject and speaking ability.

Vinod Kumar who is one of the top evangelist of India, who is working for Microsoft also taught me some of the good tips about how to use Live Meetings and do effective presentation online. Thanks Vinod!

Overall, I enjoyed a big and hope to have future VTech Sessions. As per my knowledge Microsoft will soon put all the PPTs as well the recorded sessions online. This way, if you have not attended the session earlier, you can still get the complete feeling for the same.

Abstract of the two sessions, which I presented at Virtual TechDays are here.

SQL Server 2008: High Availability with SQL Server 2008 – “When, what where and how?
Often in implementing High-Availability (HA) options with SQL Server we have seen people confuse it with DR options. This sessions brings out the practical things to consider using HA options and some of the core features introduced with SQL Server 2008 which makes some of the HA options so compelling for Enterprises to use. HA options can be used in various mix-and-match flavors and this session shows how a combination can get compelling architectures one can implement.

SQL Server 2008 – Performance tuning – Learn the techniques of the master for server tuning
If your system has a performance problem, how do you know whether the problem lies in the application or the database? You need a tool that will let you view interactions between the application and the database, and that’s where Microsoft SQL Server Profiler and a number of other tools comes in. In this webcast, we’ll take a look at some common problems (with CPU, Memory, Network, Storage etc) and teach you how to analyze those tricky performance problems that lie somewhere between the application and the database but the components that surround them.

I am exceedingly impressed and inspired by an on-going series of Big Thinkers by Robert Cain – A SQL Server MVP and a genial, whole-souled person.

Robert Cain and Pinal Dave

On meeting Robert Cain earlier this year at SQL Server MVP Summit in Seattle I asked him a question – Where do you get so many innovative ideas to write on blog and create presentations? He replied, “I do not try to get ideas, my experience inspires me.”

Well, it is true that Robert has more than 10 years of experience as one of the TOP experts in SQL Server. Unlike most of the SQL Server MVPs his knowledge is not limited to SQL Server; he is well versed in ASP.NET and Business Intelligence (BI) as well. What is really inspiring and great about him is that he has maintained his position as a top technology expert and has used his position to help out others through his comments/answers in various forums.

Before I answer the question what is big thinkers and why Robert is a big thinker, let me tell you when did I last come across his blog. I was looking forward to learn about BI and I searched for the same in the search engine. I found the following article of Robert. I right away downloaded it and read it through and through. Instead of reading my experience about this easy-to-follow and crisp article, I would suggest you all to experience it yourself. Download the PDF from Introduction To Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence.

Robert takes personal interest when it comes to advising and playing the role of a mentor to the members of community. He has another very useful presentation available online Careers in SQL Server. Even though you are an experienced user I would still recommend you to go through this PDF to see where you stand in your career and what should be your next step.

As I mentioned earlier, Robert is one of the few experts who can fluently talk on both SQL as well as .NET. He has written a marvelous series on FILESTREAM type and storage of varbinary, which is a complete guide on this subject. I strongly suggest that you give it a look, and I promise that it is an easy read.

I may or may not write another part of this series of Big Thinkers but I salute to a real big thinker Robert Cain!

K-MUG organized TechEd Trivandrum on 27th June, 2009. They even launched an official PASS Chapter in Trivandrum. The complete report of this event is here. This event like TechEd in Ahmedabad, was a huge success and saw a huge number of attendees from all over India. Jacob Sebastian and Pinal Dave had presented two solid SQL Sessions and created lots of buzz about Microsoft. The event saw many wonderful speakers.I really appreciate the state-of-the-art facility at K-Mug and the amazing crowd brimming with enthusiasm. You can check out K-MUG event page for further information.

I really want to thank two people in particular for making the very first TechEd Trivandrum a grand success – 1) Sreejumon – the Founder and the President of Kerala Microsoft User group and 2) Binoy K – the Vice President of K-MUG.

Let us go over few interesting details about the event.

Pinal Dave explained about PASS Chapters and its benefits. He gave a memorable welcome note to New PASS chapter leaders and the attendees.

Jacob Sebastian inaugurated K-Mug PASS chapter.

Pinal Dave commenced the event with the very first SQL Session of ‘SQL Server Best Practices’.

Jacob Sebastian gave a brilliant session on ‘SQL Logical Query Execution and Optimization Tips’

Pinal Dave was called again to give a Demo on ‘Windows 7′ – which came as a surprise to everyone including Pinal. But Pinal made it a real fun by making people laugh while he smoothly and quickly covered all the features of Windows 7 unbelievably in 10 mins!

Jacob Sebastian gave away his book “The art of XSD” to the best participant of the event.

Some of the renowned speakers from all around India were present at the event.

Swami Vivekanand has always been my inspiration and I have always wanted to go to that place where he practiced meditation. I was lucky enough to visit Vivekanand Rock at Kanya Kumari during this trip to Kerala. One more interesting thing which I managed to do in this trip was reading a very useful book The Rational Guide to Building Technical User Communities (Rational Guides) (Paperback) by Greg Low..

Here are few more photos of the same event.

DotNet Buzz Delhi is organizing TechEd Delhi on July 11, 2009. Not just this, they are launching an official PASS Chapter in Delhi. The Agenda of the event is here and if you are around Delhi do not miss the opportunity to be a part of this upcoming great event. If you are keen to know what this event holds in store for you then read about TechEd in Ahmedabad, which saw a huge number of attendees and was a grand success. Jacob Sebastian and Pinal Dave had presented two solid SQL Sessions and created lots of buzz about Microsoft.

I will be at TechEd and will present a session on ‘SQL Server Best Practices’. This session will mainly focus on SQL Server best practices that are not commonly known. There is a huge gamut of information which can drastically enhance the performance of a system, but these are not widely known to users. I will share with you all those brilliant tips through demo to help to develop clear idea.

Jacob Sebastian, my friend and a SQL Server MVP, will also be there to support this event. He will present a session on ‘Logical Query Execution Flow’ where he will discuss how a given T-SQL Query is processed and executed. A comprehensive understanding of the query execution flow will help you solve several common problems and will help you answer a number of baffling questions that you often come across.

Again, those of you who have requested for SQL Server Cheat Sheet, I will have one copy for all of you who will attend this event.

A comprehensive understanding of the query execution flow will help you solve several common problems and will help you answer a number of baffling questions that you often come across. Believe me this session was very much applauded at TechEd in Ahmedabad. I highly recommend this session to everyone interested in technology.

Jacob Sebastian will also give away his book ‘The Art of XSD – SQL Server XML Schema Collections’ at K-Mug TechEd. This unique book deals with the subject of XSD, which is very crucial to understand if you want to explore the potential of XML. This topic is hardly well covered in any other book, which makes this book a must-have if you want to explore SQL Server Beyond Relational. Please read post by Jacob regarding how one can win his famous book here.

If any of you is interested in attending this event and meeting Jacob and me then do let me know. I will be staying an extra day at Trivandrum on Sunday, 28th June, so we can meet on that day as well.
