I have Galaxy Grand Duos and this fix did not work. This behaviour started only about a week ago after some updates to some google app. Even if it did it would be a pain to do it every time I received a message. What actually worked was “Memory Cleaner” by Gannicus. This is a holdover from my older Galaxy POP GT-S5570I Gingerbread 2.3 which was extremely short on memory. I have the shortcut on the home page. It is a single tap workaround.

Yes it worked .. thanks a lot, let me just say that the application (as we see in the pictures, but its not that clear) with the options you mention we can find it under the ALL tab.. only there we find the application with those options to clear the data.

I could not find any badge provider icon in the list of apps. i ytied clearing the messaging data but no use

I also have been experiencing this for a couple of days now and I also did the whole restart procedure BUT unlike the above instructions, I clicked on the icon “Phone”, clicked on the last text message log and voila, message count disappeared when I went back to the home screen.
Try it and see if it works for you.

I am having this problem and it’s driving me crazy. I tried clearing the badge provider as you described and it didn’t work. I have no idea what to do.

yup faced the same issue several time on my android phone ,but resolved it by deleting all the inbox messages ..
Will try ur steps if problm occurs again.
