SQLAuthority News – Reset Messaging (SMS/Text) Icon Count in Android Jelly Bean

Though, this blog post has nothing to do with SQL, this particular issue has been annoying me for a long time. I use Galaxy SIII updated with Android Jelly Bean. I am a big fan of this phone and I have written an efficiency tip about Android as well here Android Efficiency Tips and Tricks – Personal Technology Tip. Recently it started to give me one very annoying error.

I had recently received a single SMS/Text on my phone. After I read the message the icon did not reset.

Here are few of the things I tried but the icon did not reset. This keeps on confusing me as every time I check my phone, I see one unread Text but when I click on it there was no new message. This pretty much killed my efficiency as I spent more time  checking my message box when there was no new message. It became extremely annoying at times. Here are few of the things which I have done but I got no success.

  • Restart the phone (multiple times)
  • Tried to empty out all the messages from my message box (I did take backup before)
  • Asked my friends to send new messages (more messages than unread count)

All of the above got me no results. There was one option which I knew will for sure fix the issue but I did not want to try that was Reset the Phone to Factor Settings.

After a few trial and error I finally figured out the way to fix the problem.

Go to Settings >> Applications Manager

Now under Applications Manager Click on BadgeProvider.

Under BadgeProvider click on Clear Data.

As soon as you click on Clear Data and go back to your main screen, you will notice that your Messenging Icon will now reset and will display your current unread message. If your current unread message is zero, it will not show any unread message. In my case I did not restart my phone but couple of users reported that they had to RESTART the phone after above process.

Let me know if you are a victim of this issue and if this instruction are helpful.

  1. yup faced the same issue several time on my android phone ,but resolved it by deleting all the inbox messages ..
Will try ur steps if problm occurs again.

    • The invalid numbers went away, but came back 90 seconds later. I don’t understand why Motorola can fix this software problem.

  2. I am having this problem and it’s driving me crazy. I tried clearing the badge provider as you described and it didn’t work. I have no idea what to do.

  3. I also have been experiencing this for a couple of days now and I also did the whole restart procedure BUT unlike the above instructions, I clicked on the icon “Phone”, clicked on the last text message log and voila, message count disappeared when I went back to the home screen.
Try it and see if it works for you.

  4. hey, tried & succeeded thankz a lot dude.. was planning for a fctry reset.. u saved my ass… i needed to restart inorder to get it wrked

  5. Yes it worked .. thanks a lot, let me just say that the application (as we see in the pictures, but its not that clear) with the options you mention we can find it under the ALL tab.. only there we find the application with those options to clear the data.

  6. I have Galaxy Grand Duos and this fix did not work. This behaviour started only about a week ago after some updates to some google app. Even if it did it would be a pain to do it every time I received a message. What actually worked was “Memory Cleaner” by Gannicus. This is a holdover from my older Galaxy POP GT-S5570I Gingerbread 2.3 which was extremely short on memory. I have the shortcut on the home page. It is a single tap workaround.

  7. That worked for me. I have a Galaxy II phone. When I deleted all of my messages and emptied my deleted messages, I got the -1 count on my icon. After following these instructions, I re-booted. It still said -1. I sent a message to the phone. It said 1 unread message. I deleted it and the icon said -1. I deleted the icon and replaced it from y Apps and the icon displayed the correct number of unread messages. Whew!

  8. I have this problem and I don’t have “badgeprovider”. I tried clearing “smspush” data (someone else said that might work) but it didn’t. I saw the message in question but it never made it to my inbox, it was an alert from my credit card company. I can SEARCH for the message and find it, but it won’t show in my inbox and I can’t do anything useful from the search screen. It’s like it tried to come through and got stuck halfway. I’ve rebooted the phone, and the messaging app, several times.

My phone is an LG. Any ideas?

  9. If you can’t find badge provider, scroll to the right to the “All” tab. This works for the email app, also. My S2 showed I had 1 email, but when I checked both accounts, no new emails were shown. Was about ready to factory reset when I found this and tried it and it work! Thanks.

  10. I have different version android, there is no badge app, but from notification area (locate at top of screen, 1 row) i can swip down to open all notification and swip left or right notification for deleting data….. BUT when open icon message this notification will show up again….. GRRRRRRRR

  11. Hi there. I have the number13 on my msg folder. I have tried the process 5 -6 times and nothing. My clear data button is greyed out but I tried disable and force stop. Reboot and its still there. Pls help

  12. I had Samsung Galaxy S3 and that worked for me while it was happening. Now I own LG G2 and I don’t have Badge Provider in my App manager. Not even under another similar name… Do you have an idea how could I make this go away?

    Many thanks

  13. I couldn’t find badgeprovider on my LG Spectrum and I tried several other suggestions and nothing worked. I finally found a solution. I downloaded an app named “Reset unread Sms” and ran that and it cleared the false flag.

  14. Thank you!! I have been fighting with this for days!! Saw many different suggestion..none worked. Yours did!! BTW I have a Samsung Galaxy Rugby LTE. Worked great!

  15. It worked–thank you! The number kept growing and was up to 47. Finally, it is cleared after rebooting. I am very grateful to you for your help!

  16. I am having the same issue with my message counter. I have an LG Optimus Exceed II android. I have gone into my applications manager under ALL several times. I have nothing that says Badgeprovider. I have cleared the cache multiple times in my messages and it is still saying i have 1 message when i dont. Any suggestions? Thanks!
